Strength
My wood art piece for The Very Asian Art Show. My piece is entitled “Strength” which is also the Chinese character written on her shirt. I did the piece as a tribute to all the Asian women especially the ones in my life who are like superheroes that show heroism and strength in the face so many obstacles in not just their personal but professional lives. The Very Asian Art Show, curated by Genevieve Santos of Le Petit Elefant, showcased 18 AAPI artists celebrating and engaging in what it means to be "very Asian". A portion of the proceeds went to API EQUALITY - LA "Empowering Asian & Pacific Islander communities to achieve LGBTQ, racial, and social justice". During a news segment, news anchor Michelle Li shared her love for eating dumplings on New Year’s Day 2022. A viewer later called in response, disgruntled and annoyed at Li for being “very Asian” and claimed that she needs to “keep her Korean to herself.” In response, Li and the Asian-Pacific Islander community have embraced the term “very Asian” and turned it into a movement of empowerment and unapologetic pride for being “very Asian.”
